Overview

JUST LISTEN is a project co-funded by the European Commission, working to strengthen the ways in which children are heard, protected, and supported within justice systems across Europe. It promotes a child rights-based, trauma-informed approach to judicial processes, particularly in cases involving abuse and exploitation.

Why It Matters

Justice systems can be complex and intimidating for children, with real risks of re-traumatisation. While legal frameworks recognise children’s rights, implementation is often inconsistent.

JUST-LISTEN focuses on improving how children are engaged in practice, ensuring their voices are heard safely and meaningfully.

The project supports more child-friendly justice systems by:

  • Training judicial professionals (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police, psychologists)
  • Developing practical tools for safe and effective engagement with children
  • Co-designing approaches with children and young people
  • Promoting uptake of child rights-based practices across systems

Rooted in Partnership

The project brings together academic, legal, and child protection partners across Europe, to ensure both evidence-based and practical outcomes.
