Reflections: Day 2 of the 1st Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children

1st GMC on Evac 2

The 1st Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, held in Bogotá on November 7-8, marked a significant milestone in the global fight against child violence. With over 1,400 participants from governments, civil society and the private sector, the Conference brought together a diverse array of stakeholders committed to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children worldwide. My colleague Helen Mason and I attended the Conference and met with many allies and friends. But we also approached several new potential partners including government officials, representatives from the INGO sector and donors.

This unique gathering underscored the urgent need for action. It culminated in an impressive 101 pledges from governments around the world, signalling a collective commitment to combat violence against children. These pledges are not merely symbolic; they represent a call to action that emphasizes the importance of translating words into tangible outcomes. As the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” It is crucial that these commitments lead to concrete measures that protect children and empower them to speak out against violence.

A record-breaking event ... in more ways than one!

The number of attending countries was a new record and led to a surprise announcement from the World Guinness Book of Records! Thanks to the participation of 1,400 delegates from 119 countries, the Conference was recognized in the Guinness World Records for the most countries represented at a childhood violence summit. The Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Luis Gilberto Murillo Urrutia, proudly accepted the accolade, but immediately encouraged the next host of the 2nd Ministerial Conference on Violence Against Children (2026) to break that record. The more countries that get involved in the fight against VAC, the better!

A Powerful Message

A powerful message that emerged from the conference was the affirmation that every child has a voice and deserves to be heard. No child should be left unheard, especially in matters that directly affect their safety and wellbeing. This fully aligns with the mission and vision from Child Helpline International. By establishing and strengthening child helplines, we can create an environment where children feel safe to express their concerns and seek help without fear of retribution or stigma. Child helplines are essential services that provide children with a safe space to voice their concerns, seek help, and report instances of violence or abuse. They play a pivotal role in ensuring that every child has access to support and protection.

As we reflect on the discussions and commitments made during the conference, it is clear that the road ahead requires collaboration and dedication from all stakeholders. Together we can and must create a world without violence against children!

Currently, over 130 countries operate a national child helpline. However, at this present moment in time, more than 50 countries still lack this essential service, leaving gaps in their national child protection systems.

Together with partners and state actors, we are committed to bridging these gaps by mapping existing services for children, assessing the feasibility of establishing child helplines, and working country by country to set up toll-free, 24/7 child helplines that are accessible across the various contact channels used by children and young people.

Collaborative funding and proper investment in these services can ensure the capacity of child helplines to address the diverse needs of children everywhere.

It’s time to ensure that no child’s voice is left unheard.
