In 2024, child helplines worldwide received over 6.1 million contacts from children and young people, including 2.6 million counselling contacts where direct support was provided.

Our new factsheet brings together data from 83 child helplines around the world, offering powerful insights into the challenges children face and the support they seek.

Key findings:

  • Mental health was the most common reason for contact, with over 850,000 cases reported, the equivalent of 100 mental health contacts every hour, worldwide.

  • Violence against children accounted for one in four contacts, most often psychological or physical abuse.

  • Girls made 60% of all contacts, while 13 to 15-year-olds remained the most frequent age group to reach out (25%).

  • Phone calls remain the primary way children access support, although digital and outreach channels continue to expand.
